Sewer or septic tank?
At the 2022 census, 12,483 homes in Sligo town and the nine towns Arek covers were on the public sewer and 542 on a septic tank or another treatment system of their own (CSO Census 2022). If you're on a septic tank and every drain is slow, the tank may need emptying. That's a job for a licensed emptier, and Arek tells you if that's what it is.
What not to put down
Fat and oil from cooking, wet wipes (even the ones that say flushable), cotton buds and nappies cause most blocked drains. Pour fat into a jar and bin it.

Should I use drain cleaner?
On a slow sink, maybe once. On a full blockage it just sits in the pipe, and it's hard on old pipes and on whoever opens them next.
Is a blocked toilet an emergency?
If it's your only toilet or it's overflowing, yes. Ring 085 708 8979.
Who's responsible for the drain outside?
In general the pipes serving only your house are yours. Shared or public sewers are Uisce Éireann's. Arek tells you which it is.
Do you empty septic tanks?
No. That needs a licensed emptier. Arek clears the blockage and tells you if the tank is the cause.
